WP3

"How far that little candle throws his beams!"

(The Merchant of Venice)

We need trustable data to support decisions to draw guidelines for the management plan for artisanal coastal fishery in the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area. The guidelines will take into account the information produced by the Marine Protected Area, the results of the monitoring activity, the contents developed by the project partnership for action adapted to the local context, the synthesis of the meetings held with fishermen.

WP3 Pilot activities

A detailed work plan presents the activities to come and the time schedule for the WP3, which were first described in the Initial report by Carlo Franzosini on Dec 29th, 2020 and updated on January 30th, 2021 by Mauro Angeletti, Francesco Palermo, Alberto Felici, Carlo Franzosini (University of Camerino, PP3)

Pilot Action 2.a: Survey of the catch

The survey of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the catch (species, weight, morphometric measurements of the individuals) will be carried out through:

  • 8 trips (each trip will be held every two weeks in the period of time February-June 2021) with 2 local boats (inside and outside the Marine Protected Area) of the coastal artisanal fishing segment to carry out fishing trips, with the gear normally used in the corresponding period of the year, to collect the ichthyofauna (including bycatches and undersized) for qualitative and quantitative analysis (species identification, weight determination, morphometric measurements of the individuals);
  • contextual survey ashore of the fish landed by the boats of the local coastal artisanal fishing segment;
  • descriptive survey, carried out also by means of interviews, aimed at documenting the effort made by recreational fishing in the study area and providing an estimate of catches. The interviews will be conducted in the period of time February-June 2021.
  • Pilot Action 2.b: Survey of water quality parameters

    The chemical-physical characteristics will be measured by means of 8 trips with 1 boat (each trip will be held every two weeks) to measure temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and fluorescence values, which will be acquired at various depths within the water column both in the protected area and in the surrounding area, for a total of 16 sampling stations. The “Torre del Cerrano” Marine Protected Area (MPA) has an extension of 3.431,00 ha with different marine depths, so the stations’ positions will be chosen in order to have a representative sample. The monitoring will be carried out along a total of 4 parallel transects located both inside (n=2) and outside (n=2 transects close to the mouths of the Calvano and Piomba rivers, respectively) of the MPA. Each transect will encompass 4 sampling stations located at different distances from the coast (i.e., 0.5 – 1.5 - 3 - 5 NM). Given that the area is characterized by marked seasonal fluctuations (Grati et al., Seasonal dynamics of small-scale fisheries in the Adriatic Sea, Mediterranean Marine Science 19(1), 2018, DOI: 10.12681/mms.2153) (reference), physicochemical monitoring of the water column will be performed every two weeks from March to June 2021.

    Meetings with the fisheries operators

    During the surveys and at the end of this activity, three meetings will be held with the local small-scale fisheries operators, to illustrate the advantages of managed fishing (as an alternative to open access fishing), to describe the progress of the work, to discuss in a participatory and documented way the information acquired and to collect their suggestions. These meetings will also be used to illustrate the contents developed by the project partnership in order to adapt them to the local context.

    Final report

    The final report will be the "Guidelines for the Management Plan for artisanal coastal fishery in the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area", which will take into account the information produced by the Marine Protected Area, the results of the monitoring activity, the contents developed by the project partnership for action adapted to the local context, the synthesis of the meetings held with fishermen.
