We need trustable data to support decisions to draw guidelines for the management plan for artisanal coastal fishery in the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area. The guidelines will take into account the information produced by the Marine Protected Area, the results of the monitoring activity, the contents developed by the project partnership for action adapted to the local context, the synthesis of the meetings held with fishermen.
A detailed work plan presents the activities to come and the time schedule for the WP3, which were first described in the Initial report by Carlo Franzosini on Dec 29th, 2020 and updated on January 30th, 2021 by Mauro Angeletti, Francesco Palermo, Alberto Felici, Carlo Franzosini (University of Camerino, PP3)
The survey of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the catch (species, weight, morphometric measurements of the individuals) will be carried out through:
The chemical-physical characteristics will be measured by means of 8 trips with 1 boat (each trip will be held every two weeks) to measure temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and fluorescence values, which will be acquired at various depths within the water column both in the protected area and in the surrounding area, for a total of 16 sampling stations. The “Torre del Cerrano” Marine Protected Area (MPA) has an extension of 3.431,00 ha with different marine depths, so the stations’ positions will be chosen in order to have a representative sample. The monitoring will be carried out along a total of 4 parallel transects located both inside (n=2) and outside (n=2 transects close to the mouths of the Calvano and Piomba rivers, respectively) of the MPA. Each transect will encompass 4 sampling stations located at different distances from the coast (i.e., 0.5 – 1.5 - 3 - 5 NM). Given that the area is characterized by marked seasonal fluctuations (Grati et al., Seasonal dynamics of small-scale fisheries in the Adriatic Sea, Mediterranean Marine Science 19(1), 2018, DOI: 10.12681/mms.2153) (reference), physicochemical monitoring of the water column will be performed every two weeks from March to June 2021.
During the surveys and at the end of this activity, three meetings will be held with the local small-scale fisheries operators, to illustrate the advantages of managed fishing (as an alternative to open access fishing), to describe the progress of the work, to discuss in a participatory and documented way the information acquired and to collect their suggestions. These meetings will also be used to illustrate the contents developed by the project partnership in order to adapt them to the local context.
The final report will be the "Guidelines for the Management Plan for artisanal coastal fishery in the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area", which will take into account the information produced by the Marine Protected Area, the results of the monitoring activity, the contents developed by the project partnership for action adapted to the local context, the synthesis of the meetings held with fishermen.
